Our Story

Over the Years

Frank Raymond opens a new hotel, the Springwood Hotel, a single-storey building fronting the highway at the eastern end of town.

Hotel changes hands and is renamed ‘Oriental Hotel’

James Lawson bought land including the Springwood Hotel from Raymond and replaced his hotel with a large two-storey building, renamed the Oriental Hotel.

Tooth & Co Brewers take over management and rename as ‘Hotel Sydenham’

Major brewers Tooth and Co assume ownership of the business and put in their own licensee, George Sydenham, from Jenolan Caves House. The name of the hotel was changed to Hotel Sydenham.

Thomas Lawson assumes ownership from his father

William Maxwell Lawson, James’s third son, succeeded to ownership in 1926, made some renovations to the hotel in 1928. Name changed back to the Oriental Hotel.

Requisitioned by the Government for use during WWII

The Ori is requisitioned by the Government during WWII where it housed children evacuated from Burnside Homes, Parramatta. The hotel leaves the stewardship of the Lawson family.

New owners

New owners make major changes to the Oriental in the early 1960s, creating a metal-clad single storey bar along the main frontage to Macquarie Road.

John Lewis assumes ownership

John Lewis acquires the hotel as owner and licensee and creates a bistro in the front part of the building, with an open-air eating area, as part of his policy ‘to refurbish and upgrade the Oriental Hotel’.

Present Day

The Wayne Family assume ownership

The Ori has been owned and operated by the Wayne family for over ten years. Our ethos is to bring excellence in food, beverage and entertainment to the Springwood community. We look forward to providing an amazing hospitality experience for many years to come.
